The Dead Language

"The Dead Language"

"Good day old bean", "well done chap", "hey dude, hang loose." We've all heard them, but who actually says these dead catch phrases, and more importantly, what do they mean. "Cowabunga" what is the deal with this lame saying? What were the Ninja Turtles thinking? Perhaps the Master Splinter was too busy fighting the Shredder to have time to teach the mutants proper English. The phrase "hang loose" is also one that strikes a bell to the nards. Who or what are they referring to for the looseness? Why do 'surfer-d00ds' say it to eachother? Perhaps they took grammar with the Turtles? How about this one: "Coolio." I heard that phrase the other day on the bus and couldn't believe my ears. Does anyone (aside from DY) even remember who Coolio is? I felt like punching the person who said it right in the face. But I didn't.

As confusing as the language may seem, people just keep on making it harder to understand. Take for instance rap artists, or as I like to call them, people who can talk pretty fast in rhyme (sometimes). Rappers make stuff up all the time and then it somehow finds its way into urban dictionaries. Sooner or later the "trendy" dictionaries will pick up on this slang and incorporate it into their book. I remember the day when "soy-mocha-frapachino" made it's way into the old book of words BECAUSE IT WAS YESTERDAY! But back to rap; lets start with Lil' Jon and the Yin Yang twins and their sayings: "wwwwhhhhhaaattttt! Eeeeyyyyeeeeeaaaahhhyyyyaaa! Ooooookkkkkkkk! aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHH! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh! SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET!"

If I may be so blunt to say it, what is the dealio here? You can't keep making up words and noises and sound effects to fit in your songs, that's just weird. "Hey, Lil' J, I've been working on this new song and I need something that rhymes with 'No Way.' Any ideas?" "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKKKKKKKKKK!"

It's just getting out of hand and starting to piss me off a little. I think I'm going to start making up my own words and making people feel like idiots when they do not know what they mean. First word: 'Revolontagious.' Yeah, it's not going in any rap songs mainly due to it having over 2 syllables, but it's a pretty sweet word to say to sound smart. Also how about "Gusting" as in the opposite of 'disgusting.' Screw the wind blowing, gusting now means LEGIT.
